Meet Jackie, a dedicated volunteer making a meaningful impact through our Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) program. Jackie’s journey began with a heartfelt desire to give back to the community, and this has blossomed into a rewarding experience filled with warmth and connection.
Embracing the volunteer spirit
‘I have always thought about volunteering in some capacity but never really knew how to go about it,’ Jackie shared. ‘I was introduced to the ACVVS program at Elder Rights Australia, and after learning what was involved, I decided very quickly that this is something I could do.’
Building bridges through companionship
Jackie’s commitment to making a difference shines through as she spends one hour per week with *Susie, a vibrant 91-year-old woman with a treasure trove of life experiences. Their time together is filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and a mutual exchange of wisdom. ‘I feel I have made a small difference in her life…but she has no idea how much she has made a huge difference to mine,’ Jackie said, reflecting on their bond’s profound impact.
The power of human connection
Jackie has found joy in brightening Susie’s days through volunteer work and creating meaningful connections that transcend age barriers. ‘At the end of my visit Susie tells me how much she has enjoyed our time together and looks forward to seeing me again in a week,’ Jackie shared. ‘I am immensely proud of my time volunteering, knowing I have given just a little to provide companionship, banter, and laughter to an older person who needs some one-on-one time. It’s a feel-good role.’
