As part of our advocacy work at Elder Rights Advocacy, we recently assisted a client in purchasing a bed, mattress, sofa, and pillows from a third-party supplier, using their Home Care Package (HCP) funds – the request of the older person, to their provider, being in line with their assessed care plan needs. However, the HCP provider initially refused to approve the purchase, leaving the client without the necessary equipment.
Through our advocacy efforts, we contacted the provider to review their decision. We emphasised the importance of respecting older adults’ needs and preferences in care. We also provided letters of support from the client’s GP and occupational therapist (OT) to strengthen our case. After further discussions, the provider agreed to approve the purchase of a bed base, mattress, and sofa, respecting the client’s choice.
Despite the initial refusal, we persisted in advocating for the pillows’ medical necessity to support the client’s diagnosis of orthopnoea and the risk of recurrent heart failure. After further discussions, the provider finally agreed to approve the purchase of pillows from the client’s choice of third-party supplier.
Thanks to our advocacy work, the client received the furnishings needed, including a bed base, mattress, pillows, and a sofa, for $11,221, paid using HCP funds.
At Elder Rights Advocacy, we are committed to promoting the human rights of all older adults and ensuring that they receive safe, quality aged care that reflects and respects their individual needs and preferences.
