Hello fellow volunteers,
I have been a Volunteer visitor with Elder rights Advocacy for around 18 months, visiting a number of residents in an aged care facility. I was drawn toward this role with ERA from a growing awareness of the uniqueness and importance of each person, and to have this affirmed at a personal level in the latter years of life is important.
It has been a privilege to have now spent time with four people, all so different, and yet all so responsive in their own way. It might be a broad smile when some words are discovered in a word finder puzzle, or much gratitude when a spare landscape painting found a perfect spot on their bedroom wall.
At other times, it’s just having someone to chat with about a range of topics- from family to politics! Sometimes it is a warm smile accompanied by a person’s effort to draw out the length of a handshake.
I look forward to continuing my involvement with ERA and appreciate the support and encouragement that is always readily available.
