“The power of cultural connections”
Brenda first came across an advertisement calling for a Macedonian-speaking volunteer and thought, “Please tell me how I can be part of this program!” For the past ten months, Brenda has been generously volunteering with ACVVS, visiting five older Macedonian recipients — some of whom speak only Macedonian. She recognises how vital it is for older people from culturally diverse backgrounds to connect with someone who understands their language and culture.
Brenda brings a big heart and an infectious, positive energy to her visits. Her compassion for others and her awareness of their social needs shine through in everything she does. While she’s not a professional interpreter, Brenda has often helped bridge communication gaps in meaningful ways. She connects easily, sharing stories about culture, their shared homeland, and the migrant experience.
Reflecting on her experience, Brenda says, “I could never have imagined how much I would enjoy spending time with my matched recipients — I’m very fond of them all and really look forward to each visit”.
Recipient and family feedback

“We’re incredibly grateful that Brenda visits our mum. It brings us comfort knowing she has a kind and caring friend.”
“Brenda’s visits are the highlight of Mum’s week. She’s so friendly, and always takes the time to connect with her on a personal level.”
